Mia Threapleton’s French Connection

Twenty-four-year-old Mia Threapleton has appeared in a handful of films and TV series, playing a small part in the Jude Law period drama Firebrand and a main role on Apple TV+’s The Buccaneers. But now she’s breaking bigger than ever, with a lead role in The Phoenician SchemeWes Anderson’s new film, which premieres later this month at the Cannes Film Festival. The movie marks the moment Threapleton will be discovered by a larger public, to say nothing of the industry itself. It’s also the moment when more people are bound to learn about Threapleton’s background—specifically, that she is Kate Winslet’s daughter. “She was incredibly supportive of my desire to want to do this on my own because that’s how she did it. She did it on her own,” Threapleton tells David Canfield in an exclusive interview. “Now I get to talk to her about cool work stories that I have experienced myself, which is lovely.”

Elsewhere in HWD, Caroline Reilly gathers the cast and creative team of The Righteous Gemstones to say farewell to their HBO comedy, which just aired its series finale; Joshua Rivera unpacks everything you might not know about the new Last of Us villain played by Jeffrey Wright; Karen Valby salutes Quinta Brunson on SNL; and Savannah Walsh tries to untangle what Donald Trump could possibly mean by declaring a “100% tariff” on films “produced in foreign lands.”

Why was The Righteous Gemstones, a comedy about a Bible-thumping family, so special? “Because it is based in truth,” says Cassidy Freeman. “I mean, no show with this much old dick should have you on the verge of tears every episode.”
