See a rare surviving painting by Artemisia Gentileschi, the greatest female artist of her generation, in a new temporary display at the Palace of Holyroodhouse. The rediscovered painting, Susanna and the Elders, sheds fresh light on her creative process and her time in London in the late 1630s.

Mary, Queen of Scots is one of Scotland’s most well-known historic figures. She succeeded to the throne at just six days old, but her reign was short, turbulent and filled with dramatic episodes, many of which took place at the Palace of Holyroodhouse.

Don’t miss a visit to our latest exhibition Royal Portraits: A Century of Photography, where you can view this photograph of Queen Elizabeth II by Julian Calder. Calder was inspired by 19th-century paintings of Clan chiefs in his portrayal of Queen Elizabeth II in the robes of the Order of the Thistle, standing on the Balmoral Estate in Scotland.
